One of the hardest questions to figure out when I travel is the tipping problem. It is not just question of money, but culture too. There are countries like US and Canada where the tipping is your obligatory extra 20% to the bill and others like Japan where tipping might be seen as insulting act of ignorance.

BBC is gathering together world travel knowledge and here are the results:

Australia - basically non-existent.
China - never have to tip anywhere
Egypt - you are expected to tip - it’s a way of life
Estonia - not very common
France - service must be included in the price, by law (usually about 15%)
Germany - tipping seems strange to many Germans
Hong Kong - taxi drivers do not expect tips
Italy - no tip is expected in restaurants throughout Italy; if you’re feeling generous, you can leave some coins on the table as you leave
Japan - don’t.
Mexico - tipping is expected for almost any service
New Zealand - don’t tip. Ever.
United Kingdom - you do not tip cash at the bar in a pub. If you are impressed with the barkeep’s service, you can offer to buy them a drink.
