If there is undisputable truth it is that Thessaloniki is the main party center in Greece. Athens is ancient and historical but it has too much of capital-feeling in it (which is inevitable because it is the capital). Thessaloniki at the same time is casual bash of life-lovers.

Sights
You can see churches to the left, right and of course, across the corner. There were so many of them that I was totally confused which one was the so much praised St. Demetrius. To all other explorers: St. Demetrius is on the top of a small hill overlooking the city and facing to the bay. It seems that many people have their baptism or wedding ceremonies there and these are more interesting than the church itself. At the same time young Greeks are not fanatically religious. Read down.

And drinks
The beach-bars are situated along the sea-alley facing Thermaikos Bay. They look like shiny noisy strand: crowded with people having their coffee in the morning or cocktail at night. You get out of one and immediately you are in the next in line tempting you with cool drinks and interesting acquaintances. People in these bars are flirtatious and extremely friendly but never annoying. Most of them speak English and will understand your No quite well if you are not in a mood for communication.

Safety
Generally speaking Thessaloniki is safe, just do not get too drunk and you will be able to find your way home. Like any other big city in summer there are thieves so keep your documents and cash in safe place and never leave your bags or wallets unattended.

Also do not miss

  • The White Tower (14c, city’s symbol)
  • Coffee in the city tower (4 euro)
  • Eat at least one piece of bougatsa with white cheese (1.5 euro)
  • My choice: have lunch at Sofiano, small seafood restaurant (lunch 15-20 euro)
  • A play of backgammon in the café in front of the Arch (the one next to Starbucks)
  • Dreaming for a yacht trip? Check the Thessaloniki Port Authority: http://www.thpa.gr
  • And municipality’s official webpage: http://www.thessalonikicity.gr
  • Aristotle’s Square (its specific outlines were used in Absolut Thessaloniki ad)
