Probably one of the most unique countries in this world occupies a whole continent where the winter is in July and August and the summer heats are coming in January. Yes, you guessed right, this magic place is called Australia.
The first delusion which you might bump to is the fact that you can not cross Australia in a day. In addition the coastal line is very populated but when you go deeper and deeper in the desert, you can find yourself almost all alone in this universe. Cars can go for miles and miles without any change to stop for a rest. In the so called outback, the large and less populated areas away from the coast, there are no gas stations, motels and what is worst, there isn’t even mobile coverage. This means no refuel, no coffee and no calls to friends when you are in need.
A friend of mine who is Australian shares that when on the road he never cares for the wildlife. His motives are simple (though he never managed to convince me that he is right): when you are on the road and no one around you in 200 miles in diameter, it is better to have a dead kangaroo than a dead man and a hurt kangaroo, lizard or other representative of the priceless local fauna. He also said that nobody will preach you of find you guilty if you run over the animals because local people find their lives and business more important. Yep, I find his words too rude too!
Other things you should keep in mind when you drive in Australia:
- You should drive always on the left-hand side of the road (like in UK).
- Distance and speed are measured in kilometers (1 kilometer = 0.621 mile).
- When you are heading to the desert, always inform the local police office. If your car breaks down, keep in it. Days are very hot, nights are freezing cold and in addition a car is easier to be spotted than a tiny man in the middle of nowhere.
- The sign Animals crossing is amusing and can save your life, slow down when you see it.
- Enjoy the Roundabouts and keep one important rule: Always give way to vehicles on the roundabout.
Now check the roundabout map below to get idea how to do it (image from Wikitravel):
