Each month we will introduce you to one country and its regions. We decided to start with Mexico. What to expect? Deeper look at the country – its most popular party destinations and out of the beaten track ideas. Also we are open to any suggestions: countries, destinations and active travel. And, lets move to Mexico.
Bienvenido
Generally speaking if you consider how to get there, your first question might be about the airports system and the air carriers. So before asking any further I’ll tell you, you may find the Mexican airlines quite tempting - as they give you alcoholic drinks for free. Then, there are more than 50 airports so you can easily start your trip from any point in the country.
The Mexican lifestyle is absolutely easy-going. If you come from the busy New York or the well organized Vancouver you’ll be socked how much less effort people put in their living here. I do not mean that Mexicans are lazy; let’s say that they are not exactly the kind of people who live to work. Being late is also not a problem, if someone is coming some 10-20 minutes later for an appointment, take if for granted, it is okay. Sure, for you this might be strange, but you should be worried that you’re abandoned if after 30 or so minutes still nobody comes to your date-point.
See, the party time is completely other story. There are many resorts where tourist are usually taken when they pay to a travel agency to organize the trip for them. However, there are also thousands of fantastic clubs and bars worth discovering. Locals will love you no matter where you come from.
What to order?
Try Absinth which is absolutely legal in Mexico. It is absolutely safe and all there rumors that absinthe makes you aggressive are just old conspiracy by the French wine producers. Obligatory is also to try local tequila made by the cacti called agave (or maybe it’s a flower?) and tepache, made from pineapple fruits. If you love the beer, the local brands are dozens, Corona is most famous one but you can have it anywhere out of Mexico.
Speak
Mexican is similar to Spanish but still there are some different words and meanings. If you do not speak any of Spanish, you’ll be understood in most of the big cities or resorts, but if you travel deeper in the rural areas maybe some basic Spanish will come handy. Try not to curse or swear. Local people are deeply religious Catholics. Never mention someone’s mother in disrespectful manner because for sure you’ll get into serous problems. If someone calls you gringo or garbacho, do not get mad, because this is rarely used as offence.
Hello, Police!
Officially corruption does not exist in any country. No, it’s a fiction that can be found only in dictionaries, old books and on the yellow newspaper pages. BUT corruption exists and one of the places where you could be kindly asked by the police to give them a bribe. The best thing you can do is to pay what they want or if they want too much, just take some 200 pesos (or some $20) and say that this is all you have. BUT do not bribe if you’re not asked to. This could take you in deeper problems.
