The new Lessno site just added split tickets to the search results! Before we get into the details, let’s first shed some light on the topic of split tickets.
What are split tickets?
The term split tickets is used to describe multiple air reservations within the same travel itinerary. Normally, when you want to travel somewhere, all flights are issued on a single reservation (or PNR which is the industry term for an airline reservation). An air reservation can contain multiple flights from multiple airlines as long as the airlines involved have an agreement between themselves. Having a single PNR for a travel itinerary makes life a lot simpler for everyone starting with the airlines but also for the travel agents and the travelers. However, with more than a thousand airlines worldwide, it is hard to have interline agreements with everybody else. In fact, only the major airlines have a good number of interline agreements with other carriers and sometimes even major airlines are not that well connected! To further complicate the issue, low-cost carriers have traditionally resisted making such partnerships with other airlines.
