This week was closed the German airport Tempelhof. The airport had interesting history and now, when it shut down for ever, my main wonders are what they are going to construct there?

Tempelhof had its own trace in history. In the beginning of the century it was one of the busiest airports. Lufthansa was founded in Tempelhof in 1926. Then during WWII the airport continued to play important role for the local people and the war tactics.

The idea airport to be closed dates back to 1996 when the local government took the decision that the entire planning should aim at concentrating domestic and international air traffic in Berlin and Brandenburg at one airport: Berlin-Schönefeld International Airport. To ensure investment protection as well as to fend off opposition to Schöenefeld International’s expansion, it was mandated that first Tempelhof and then Tegel must be closed.

  • In the course of expansion into BBI, Schoenefeld Airport will be extended by an area measuring 970 hectares. In total, the new airport will cover 1,470 hectares, equivalent to 2,000 football pitches.
  • Midfield Airport BBI: The terminal building of BBI will be situated between two parallel runways which, as a result of the distance of 1,900 metres between them, can be operated separately. The terminal, gate positions and parking spaces are also located compactly between the runways. A large portion of the ground noise thus remains inside the airport fence.
  • The midfield terminal will have six floors and the initial version will have enough space to handle 22–25 million passengers.
  • The northern runway of Schoenefeld Airport has been closed and removed.
  • BBI northern runway: The current southern runway of Schoenefeld Airport will be extended from 3,000 to 3,600 metres.
  • BBI southern runway: Construction of a new runway with a length of 4,000 m.
  • Taxiways: A flexible taxiway system will assure high performance at BBI Airport.
  • Expansion modules: In modules BBI can be expanded for up to 40 million passengers.
  • According to current plans, the initial version of the terminal will have 16 jetways. Plans have also been drawn up to provide at least ten walk boarding positions.
  • BBI will have more than 65 aircraft parking stands.
  • Passengers at BBI will find everything ranging from domestic and European to intercontinental flights under one roof in the central terminal (“one roof concept”).
  • As many as 6,500 passengers will take off or land during a typical peak business hour at BBI.
  • Parking: Lots of parking space will border on the terminal.
  • The building costs for the airport amount to two billion euros, excluding the costs for road and rail connections and outside investments (e.g. car parks, hotels and conference centres).
  • The building costs for the airport amount to two billion euros. The costs for road and rail connections and outside investments (e.g. car parks, hotels and conference centres) are not included in this figure.

Do you know where will be located the next supa-dupa-fly in Europe?

For all of you you said at Guess#1: Germany, hurray, that’s right!

Now, think more carefully, which are the largest airports in Germany. Frankfurt undoubtedly is the largest, followed my Munich’s. Then? Then probably comes Düsseldorf. But! everyone who guessed Berlin just won this competition because next news comes from Berlin.

Getting to/from the Munich Airport (MUC) is quite easy. All you have to do is to catch the S-bahn. The S-bahn is Munich’s train system. The S8 line will take you directly to the city center at Karlplatz or Marienplatz (where the City Hall is). The S1 line also goes to the city center, but it takes a few minutes more.
